AutoCut Feature Simplifies Restorative Workflow Meena Barsoum, DMD
Autocut is a powerful feature that utilizes the intelligence and processing power of the Primescan scanner. In the previous CEREC version, a typical workflow would involve taking a preoperative scan and using the Cut tool to remove the teeth prior to scanning the preparations. This workflow saves time as it can be completed while the patient is awaking anesthesia.
Using the Autocut feature, the software and hardware automatically detects that a change has occurred and overwrites the existing teeth with the new preparations. This leaves the adjacent teeth unchanged and produces a highly accurate model.
In this case, the patient presented with recurrent caries on 20 and 21. The treatment plan included a full coverage restoration on 20 and a partial coverage inlay restoration on 21. The upper, lower and buccal bite images were scanned while the patient awaited anesthesia. I then prepared the teeth and scanned only the new preparations, allowing the software to automatically cut the pre-op and replace with the new preparation. The software then automatically placed the margins on both preparations, set the model axis and presented me with an initial proposal that required very minimal modification to occlusion and contacts. Having two milling machines allowed me to simultaneously produce both restorations, process and deliver them in fewer than 90 minutes. The margin fit was excellent and the occlusion was perfect.
